There
was more movement on the Eastern Front, where the armies were
not as evenly matched. The poorly-equipped Russians suffered
many losses fighting off Austria-Hungary and Turkey.
In fact, the high casualties and poor showing of the Russian
army was an important factor in the Russian Revolution. By
1917 Russia had lost a staggering 74% of the soldiers it sent
to war.
