Before the European invasion of Africa there were over 800 distinct languages and many diverse cultures. The European invasion forever changed the development of Africa. From the 16th century on there was a drain of human resources due to the slave trade. When the slave trade was abolished, direct European intervention arrived with the ideology of imperialism, leaving behind a legacy of problems for modern Africans to contend with.
